Crane & Lift Safety Training

A comprehensive PowerPoint presentation for safety officers to train workmen

1

Ensure Safety

Protect users, operators, equipment, loads, and personnel in the vicinity during lifting operations.

2

Knowledge & Responsibility

Develop sufficient knowledge to be responsible when using lifting equipment.

3

Hand Signals

Give and understand correct hand signals for crane operations.

4

Rigging Procedures

Familiarize with various rigging and slinging procedures and techniques.

5

Lifting Plans

Develop ability to create lifting plans, LMS & LRA (Lift Management System & Lift Risk Assessment).

Introduction to Crane Safety

Lifting operations present significant hazards in construction and industrial environments. Proper training is essential to prevent accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

  • 75% of crane accidents are caused by human error
  • Proper planning can reduce lifting incidents by 90%
  • All personnel involved in lifting operations require specific training
  • Regular equipment inspection is mandatory

This training provides essential knowledge for safe crane and lifting operations.

Slide 1 of 6

Key Safety Responsibilities

Everyone involved in lifting operations has specific safety responsibilities:

  • Crane Operator: Must be certified, conduct pre-use inspections, follow signals precisely
  • Signal Person: Must maintain visual contact with operator, use standard hand signals
  • Rigger: Responsible for proper load attachment, weight estimation, sling selection
  • Safety Officer: Ensure compliance, conduct risk assessments, verify certifications
  • Workmen in Area: Stay clear of load path, follow exclusion zones, report hazards
Slide 2 of 6

Standard Hand Signals

Clear communication between signal person and crane operator is critical. Standard hand signals must be used and understood by all:

  • Hoist: Arm extended, fingers closed, thumb pointing upward
  • Lower: Arm extended, fingers closed, thumb pointing downward
  • Swing: Arm extended, pointing with finger in direction of swing
  • Stop: Arm extended, palm down, moving back and forth
  • Emergency Stop: Both arms extended, palms down, moving back and forth
  • Dog Everything: Clasp hands in front of body

Only one person should give signals at a time, and the signal person must maintain visual contact with the operator.

Slide 3 of 6

Rigging & Slinging Procedures

Proper rigging is essential for safe lifting operations. Key considerations include:

  • Load Weight: Always calculate/verify weight before lifting
  • Center of Gravity: Identify and position slings accordingly
  • Sling Angle: Reduce capacity as angle increases from vertical
  • Sling Protection: Use edge protection to prevent damage
  • Inspection: Check slings for damage before each use

Rigging Techniques: Choker hitch, basket hitch, vertical hitch. Select based on load type and shape.

Capacity Reduction: At 60° angle, sling capacity is reduced by 15%. At 45°, capacity is reduced by 30%.

Slide 4 of 6

Lifting Plans & Risk Assessment

All critical lifts require formal planning and risk assessment:

  • Lift Plan Components:
    • Load details (weight, dimensions, center of gravity)
    • Crane specifications and setup location
    • Lift sequence and travel path
    • Personnel assignments and qualifications
    • Emergency procedures
  • Lift Risk Assessment (LRA): Identify hazards, evaluate risks, implement controls
  • Lift Management System (LMS): Documented procedures for planning, approval, and execution of lifts
  • Critical Lift Criteria: >75% of crane capacity, multiple cranes, near power lines, complex rigging, personnel under load
Slide 5 of 6

Pre-Operation Safety Checks

Before any lifting operation, complete these essential checks:

  • Equipment Inspection:
    • Crane: Structural components, wire ropes, hydraulic systems, controls
    • Rigging: Slings, shackles, hooks for wear, deformation, or damage
    • Safety devices: Anti-two block, load moment indicator, limit switches
  • Site Assessment:
    • Ground conditions and stability
    • Overhead and underground hazards
    • Weather conditions (wind speed limits)
    • Exclusion zones and barriers
  • Personnel Verification:
    • Certifications current for operators and riggers
    • Briefing completed for all involved personnel
    • Emergency procedures understood
